   Business Education Week 2012

                              April 17, 18 & 19

We hope you joined us for Business Education Week! This is an important time each year when the business and education communities come together to make the education system in Sangamon County stronger.

During this week, Presidents and CEOs of companies partnered with schools throughout Sangamon County for the Principal for a Day project. This is an opportunity for executives to gain new leadership perspective – through the ins-and-outs of running a school for a day. More than 29 executives participated in 2011, we had 42 in 2012!

In addition, Business Professionals in the Classroom paired local professionals with a teacher in the grade level of their choice to provide worthwhile educational experiences to students. This included “team-teaching,” helping to plan classroom activities, and preparing a lesson about the professional’s own work or hobby.

We will continue these event next year and urge you to help us spread the word about this opportunity to your employees, colleagues, and friends!

Business Education Week ended with the Partners in Excellence awards on April 19. This award recognizes outstanding partnerships between the K-12 schools and business in Sangamon County.

Thanks for supporting quality education and student achievement in Sangamon County!

There comes a time when good work deserves more than a pat on the back, especially when that good work benefits the children in our community.  That’s why, in 2011, the Business Education Partnership (BEP) created the “Partners in Excellence” award.

This award recognizes the important partnership between the business and education communities. And while I could list the many benefits of these relationships, this example explains it well.

The students at Enos Elementary School, many of whom come from economically disadvantaged homes, have been “adopted”by SIU School of Medicine just a few blocks away. Through this partnership, many Enos students find themselves with needed school supplies in the fall, warm clothing to wear in the winter, books to read during the summer, and mentoring from SIU medical students and faculty. During the more than 25 years that this relationship has spanned, thousands of Enos students – and SIU School of Medicine students and employees – have benefited.

We want to honor more great examples of organizations that partner with schools, and you can help by nominating a Partner in Excellence in 2013!

Please contact Mikal Sutton with any questions at 217.525.1173, ext. 221 or msutton@gscc.org.
